Is God Really Interested in What We Wear?

Deuteronomy 22:5

The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, 

neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

It has become normal in society today for ladies to walk around scantily clad in clothing or bikinis that barely cover anything and leave nothing to the imagination.  

Men and women alike uncover and flaunt their bodies on social media in order to gratify their lust and desire to have their bodies admired. 

They are seeking after the praises of men rather than seeking to please God. 

Many today think that God does not care what we wear, and whether it’s modest or not.  But from the start of creation, we can see evidence that God does care about our clothing.

When Adam and Eve were first placed in the Garden of Eden, there was no sin, no shame, and they did not have knowledge of good and evil.  

They were sinless and pure, until the serpent deceived them into eating of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  

After they ate the forbidden fruit, their eyes were opened (in other words: they suddenly understood) what sin was.  

They felt conviction (something they had never felt before) and realized for the first time that there is a shame in being naked.   They had not felt or known any of this before because of their innocence, but now they felt the weight and condemnation that sin brings.

They began to sew fig leaves together to make aprons to cover their nakedness.

Fig leaves are approx. 4.7 – 9.8 inches long and 3.9 – 7.1 inches across and deeply lobed with three or five lobes.



    






This apron was basically just a loin covering.  (see Strong’s H2290)

They’re idea of covering their nakedness was not the same as God’s. I have to wonder if they knew that for when Adam and Eve heard God’s voice, they hid themselves from the presence of the Lord (Gen 3:8).

Once they confessed their sin to God, He did not just leave them to continue walking around in their fig leaf aprons.  God began to make for them coats of skin to clothe them more adequately.  (Gen 3:21)

The Hebrew word for coats is H3801 (kethoneth) meaning:

To cover – a shirt, coat, garment, robe 

It was a long shirt-like garment, tunic

Notice God didn’t make another apron – He didn’t make them tank tops, shorts, swimsuits, or some other skimpy outfit.  No, instead, God made them a COAT….a covering.



                  






If God didn’t care about what we wear, He would have let them continue to wear their skimpy fig leaves.  But He does care and by making the coats of skin, God was teaching them a lesson in modesty.

He clothed them completely, thus revealing that from the beginning of time, God is interested in what we wear. 

(You can read more later in Genesis chapters 2:7-25 + 3:1-24 for further study concerning this)

Isaiah 47:2-3 references the shame associated with immodesty:

…make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen…

It was a shame to make the leg bare and expose the thigh.

Open your Bible and read John 21:1-8 

Vs 1 – After these things Jesus shewed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed He Himself.

Vs 2 – There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of His disciples. 

Vs 3 – Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing.  They say unto him, We also go with thee.  They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. 

Vs 4 – But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. 

Vs 5 – Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered Him, No. 

Vs 6 – And He said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find.  They cast therefore, and now there were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. 

Vs 7 – Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard it was the Lord, he girt his Fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. 

Let’s read that last part of that verse again….

Vs 7 – ….Now when Simon Peter heard it was the Lord, he girt his Fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. 


I found this to be interesting…

After Jesus died and had resurrected, Peter went back to his old profession of fishing.   The Lord wasn’t present (or so he thought) so it sounds like he stripped down so he could work more easily.

John records Peter as being naked.  

This is an important point because Peter was not completely unclothed (according to Vine’s Expository Dictionary as well as other sources found on the internet).  
















He had on his lower garments so he could work without the incumbrance of the outer garment. In that time, that was considered the same as being naked. 

Some may say, “That was back then.  This is now.”  True, but while Society’s view on what’s modest and what’s immodest, what’s considered nakedness versus what is not considered nakedness, God’s Word and how He sees things have not changed. It is God’s standards that we have to live and abide by.  

But when Jesus…

When Peter heard that Jesus was present, all of a sudden he felt conviction over his immodesty and threw the outer layer of his clothes back around him. 



           






Reminds me of the demoniac whom Jesus delivered.  Luke 8:27 records that he wore no clothes UNTIL Jesus came on the scene.  THEN he was found clothed (he was dressed, he was modest) and in his right mind. (Mk 5:1-15 + Luke 8:26-39)

Going back to John 21…The last part verse 7 is even more interesting…

Peter was fully clothed and kept his clothes ON when he jumped in the water to swim to where Jesus was.

He didn’t strip back down to the bare minimum to swim. He jumped in the water clothes and all.

Peter realized the necessity for modesty in the presence of others when Jesus showed up.

Something to think about.

Paul admonishes us in his letter to Timothy in I Timothy 2:9….

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array. 

People will define modesty differently but regardless of how people define modesty, we must look to God’s Word for guidance in all matters.

Times change – people change – but God will never change!

Is our heart set on pleasing Him? or self?

Jeremiah 6:16

Thus saith the Lord, stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the 

old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, we will not walk therein. 

People look at modesty, the way we live, and the way we dress as being outdated.  They look at it as ‘the old paths’, outdated, and irrelevant for our day, but the old paths are the good way.  God designed this way for a reason and directs us to walk therein.  

Modesty is the guard of chastity (maintaining moral purity).

Many people have lost sense of what sin is, including sexual sins. Because of this, modesty means nothing to them. Sadly, this has slowly crept into the Church and is spreading. 

Most people would agree that it is wrong for a man to physically overpower a woman. Yet, very few think of it as wrong for a woman to sexually overpower a man through immodest clothing. 

Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that if a man looks on a woman and lusts after her, he’s committed adultery in his heart. 

Women, we need to understand men are visually stimulated, therefore, it is easier for a man to sin in his heart by looking at an immodestly clothed woman (Example:  David with Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11).  

That is not making excuse for the men and putting all the pressure and requirements on the women.  That is saying that we need to do our part to help prevent that. 

Immodest apparel can indicate the presence of a lustful spirit – a desire to flaunt the body to attract the opposite sex by lust. “Showing off what you got” whether up high or down low is not of God! That is the world’s ways, not that of a Christian with Christ residing inside of them. 

Modesty guards against immorality.

I’ve heard some complain that when modesty is taught, it’s always about do’s and don’ts for women.  As a woman, I understand how it can appear that way. However, women do tend to struggle more in the area of modesty compared to men who struggle in this area.

God gives the command concerning holy and modest clothing for a woman’s protection.

We just discussed a few Biblical examples where modesty is for the men as well as the women.  And as this study continues, we will continue to look at how God mandated modesty for the men, not just the women. 

GENDER DISTINCTION IN CLOTHING:

Have you ever noticed the signs outside of the restroom? 







If a person cannot read or is from another country, how can they tell which restroom is for women and which one is for men?  

By looking at the stick figure.  And how can you tell the stick people apart?  The men’s has a person wearing pants while the women’s has a person wearing a dress.

If there was not this distinction in clothing, one who cannot read or understand the language would have no way of differentiating which was which.

God gave men specific clothing which is different from women’s clothing.

It doesn’t matter what society says is okay or acceptable as clothing for each gender.  But it does matter what God says concerning it.

Society is trying to blur the lines of distinction between the genders, but God designed for our clothing to be separate. 

Deut. 22:5 

The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man,

The definition of Abomination means: something that causes disgust or hatred.

Anything that is an abomination unto the Lord is forever an abomination to Him.  He does not change His view concerning it. 

Society today has come to accept women wearing pants, yet it is still shocked when it sees a man wearing a dress (although clothing designers are working diligently to change this).

Many see nothing wrong with a woman walking around town in pants, yet the town would be buzzing with gossip if they saw the preacher out mowing his grass in a dress.

Why?  Because it still recognizes whether it wants to admit it or not that there are certain clothing that are distinctly for certain genders – and the lines are not to be crossed.

The voice of society is not the voice of God – and it never will be.

Cultural acceptance does not equate God’s acceptance of something.

God warns in Exodus 23:2 ….thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil.

Don’t follow the crowd!

The devil is trying his hardest to blur the lines of distinction between men and women.  

Men are trying to look and act like women.

Women are trying to look and act like men.

God created gender distinction in our hair and our clothing for a reason.

When men dress in clothing that resembles more along the lines of what women would wear, they begin to act more feminine like a woman.

When women dress more tomboyish, they begin to act more gruff and tough like a man. 

Look where our society has digressed to today.  It’s confusion and not of God!

ONE THING I’VE FOUND TO BE TRUE:

Condition of the heart affects your willingness to comply or not comply to the Word of God.

I’ve never seen a person become “free” from certain Biblical foundations when they are praying sincerely, fasting, reading the Word of God, and trying to draw closer to God. 

On the contrary, people begin to question and fall away from these Biblical truths during times of spiritual lows and feeding the carnal man more than the spiritual man. 

It goes back to being more wrapped up in things such as social media, tv, movies, computer, self, self pleasure without a real prayer life and without a God consciousness nor a real fear of God and His Word.

BIBLICAL AND HISTORICAL TRUTHS:

For thousands and thousands of years,  the typical attire for women was long skirts or dresses.   There were very few who would don a pair of pants to work in, and even then they were typically worn out of the public eye.  A woman who was seen wearing pants was looked at as uncouth (lacking good manners), wild, unholy, and not Christian or lady like.

Around the mid to late 1800’s, some women began to look for alternative options because the traditional dress was heavy, bulky, and limited their ability to work or move easily. Others, began to wear pants around the turn of the century as a way of expressing “women’s rights.”

In 1851, a woman named Elizabeth Smith Miller designed a pants-like outfit for women which consisted of a skirt that extended below the knees with a loose ‘turkish’ trousers that gathered at the ankles.  They became known as ‘bloomers’ which are named after her biggest supporter and advocate Amelia Jenks Bloomer. Despite the popularity, it also generated a lot of controversy which caused them to quickly fade after only a couple years. 

This is where the trend of wearing leggings under the skirts has come from which over time has digressed to were many are wearing the leggings without a skirt over them.  Their origin began as a way of trying to make it more acceptable for women to wear pants and still be modest until it has become the norm to wear them without a skirt or shirt covering them.  The leggings today are not modest.  They are skin tight, forming around every curve or bulge.  And most leggings you see women, young and old, wearing are made of really thin material that you can see through in places, and that’s beyond the holes and tears that they put in them to make them ‘in style.’  

Then the Roaring 20’s came in when women began to rebel and fight for ‘women’s rights’ even harder than before.  During that era, women began to cut off their long hair (their glory) for short “bobs” that made them look more manly and what they considered smart.

They cast off modesty and began to wear short skimpy dresses called “flappers” that made bare the shoulders, arms, and legs with fringes on the bottom which would twirl and attract attention as they danced and swung around.    (If you google what they are, look in their eyes and the expression on the faces.  It is very evident they were dancing with the intent to entice and fulfill the lust of the eye and the pride of the flesh.)

They began to smoke, drink, and do all the things that men normally did but was considered brazen and unchristian for a lady to partake in. 

Some also began to wear manly attire…there was little difference between them and the men.  During this time, women began to wear more immodest swimwear, something that was unheard of for both women and men.  Some women were being arrested for such indecent exposure, even in the 1940’s.  Yet, they continued to push for the right to wear what they wanted. 




It took many more years for all this to become fully and completely accepted by society, but  look where it has brought society to today.

Women began to don pants once again when the men had to go off to fight in WWII and the women had to take their place in the factories.  After the war, some continued to wear pants for sports or leisure, but the majority of women went back to wearing skirts or dresses. 

In the 1960’s and 70’s, pants on women once again resurfaced as rebellion spread across the country.  This is when pants became firmly established as a norm and appropriate clothing option for women whether at home or in public. *

IS THIS JUST HISTORY? OR BIBLICAL?

Some would say this is just history – not necessarily Biblical mandate.

Some use the reasoning that men wore robes in Bible times just as women did.

Yes, they did but there was still a distinction between women’s robes and men’s robes.  If there was not a difference, there would not have been a reason for God to condemn cross dressing, and Deuteronomy 22:5 would not have made sense at that time. 

Men’s robes were created so they could pull them up between their legs and secure them in their belt to appear as pants so they could work more easily or fight without tripping over a robe when going out to battle.  

This was referred to as “girding up the loins” 

If you research this, some pictures will show the men exposing their knees and thighs.  However, this would be inaccurate since God taught the men that exposing their thighs was the same as exposing their nakedness (Exodus 28:42 + Isaiah 47:2-3) so their thighs and knees would have been covered. 

Only the men were told to and allowed to “gird up their loins”

Job 38:3

Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou Me.

Job 40:7

Gird up the loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

Girding up the loins (putting on pants) was what the men did, not the women.






Read Exodus 28:40-43

(40) And for Aaron’s sons thou shalt make coats, 

     (these are the same coats that God made for Adam and Eve when they transgressed – Strong’s H3801)

and thou shalt make for them girdles (belts – see Strong’s H73)

and bonnets shalt thou make for them (caps – Strong’s H4021)

for glory and for beauty.

(41) And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office. 

(42) And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach.      

      (The word ‘breeches’ can be defined as drawers/trousers)   

      (see Strong’s H4370)

(43) And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him and his seed after him. 

These breeches (britches/pants) were to cover the thighs so that their nakedness would not be uncovered….so that no one would be able to see up their robe and see their thigh as the ministers walked up the ramp to the altar to offer sacrifice before the Lord for the sins of the people.  Those ‘breeches’ were made specifically for the males only, not the females.   God made a distinction between the 2 genders, the way they look and the clothes they wear, for a reason. 

Regardless of what society accepts or deems as ok, we need to seek to please God in everything because….. 

He’s called us to be holy.  (Lev 20:7 + 1 Pet 1:15-16)

He’s called us to be separate.  (2 Cor 6:17)

He’s bought us with a price, therefore we are not our own and we are to glorify Him in not just our spirit but also in our bodies.  (1 Cor 6:20)

If God labels something an abomination to Him, that is something we need to pay attention to and avoid. 

LADIES: MODESTY IS MORE THAN JUST WEARING A SKIRT

According to Oxford dictionary: Modest means = appearance intended to avoid impropriety or indecency.

As we’ve studied, Scripture and Biblical examples reveal to us that both men and women need to dress modestly, so as to avoid indecency.  And yet, women will wear a skirt or blouse that is too tight, too short, and/or too revealing.  

I’m not saying this to be condemning nor am I finger pointing.  Rather, I am teaching so as to make us more aware and conscious.  I understand that sometimes we women gain weight and the clothes become a little more snug as we’re struggling with trying to lose the extra pounds or find something a little looser that looks nice and not shabby.  

A skirt may be long enough when standing but do a mirror check to see what others may be seeing when you’re sitting….even if you are sitting at a table.  You may not be able to see what’s exposed but others can. And if there is a male who is on the carnal side, he’s going to continue to look rather than look away. 

Necklines – that one is very evident to us and to others what is being revealed.  Avoid feeding the lust of the flesh.   A woman who clothes herself in modesty is revealing her dignity. Ever notice that the greatest treasures and things that are of the most value are covered and hidden below the surface of the earth?  

Modesty must not be defined by the world’s standards.  The world boldly exclaims, “flaunt it girl!” Nor can modesty be defined by another Church’s definition of what’s modest or immodest because some are forsaking modesty and conforming to be like the world, teaching things contrary to the Bible.  That’s a whole other subject about false teachers arising in these last days.  

We need to go by what God’s Word admonishes and teaches concerning modesty and holiness. 

GUARD AGAINST CRITICAL SPIRITS

Important admonition: As you grow in holiness, guard your heart against getting a critical spirit toward how someone may or may not be dressing.  Each person is on a journey, growing and learning the ways of God.  Growth takes time.  Understanding takes time to obtain.  Some do not understand and were never taught.  They were told, but not taught.  There’s a difference.

Proverbs 22:28

     Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

Proverbs 23:10

     Remove not the old landmark….

A landmark was a boundary, a border, a territory inclosed; 

     it represented a limit as to how far one could go. 

     (see Strong’s #H1366)

Solomon issued a warning twice concerning not removing the Old or Ancient landmark (boundary).  

The words old and ancient are interchangeable.  They are the same word in the Hebrew language. (See Strong’s #H5769)

These landmarks, these boundaries of holiness were established by God, taught by the Apostles, and handed down through the ages by Holy men of Old as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.  

Just because you don’t understand them doesn’t mean they’re not important.

Just because you don’t believe it doesn’t mean it’s not true.

Just because you think it’s outdated and old fashioned doesn’t mean it’s not still relevant to our times.

We need to hold to and not remove the old landmarks more than ever before!

They were placed there for a reason.  

They are not man-made, 

they are God ordained for our protection.

The Word of God has some things written within its pages that we may not like and is hard to swallow, but don’t shoot the messenger just  because you don’t like the Message.  It’s still God’s Word.  

Many today have the misconception that preaching is supposed to mainly be motivational speaking, leaving the listener feeling good every time they leave a Church service. 

But Paul wrote to Timothy in II Timothy 3:16…

     All Scripture is given by inspiration of God

     and is profitable (G5624 = helpful, serviceable, advantageous)

     for doctrine (G1319 = instruction, learning, teaching of the 

          law/God’s instructions)

     for reproof (G1650 = proof, conviction, evidence)

          **God’s Word is to bring conviction so we’ll turn from sin.

     for correction (G1882 = a straightening up again, reformation)

          **just like discipline when we were a child caused us to 

          change our behavior and attitude, in the same way, God’s Word 

          corrects us and causes us to ‘straighten up’)

     for instruction in righteousness (G3809 = tutorage, education, 

          training, disciplinary correction, chastening, chastisement)


The Word of God is there to teach us God’s ways.

God’s Word is there to convict us when we do wrong and are sinning.

It’s there to give us correction so that we’ll straighten up and reform to God’s ways, not our own.

It’s there to instruct us in the way we are to live, act, speak, in every area of our life.

So that as children of God we may be perfected, throughly furnished (meaning fully equipped as a teacher - G1822), unto ALL GOOD WORKS.

Some will try to excuse away things when approached with Scripture saying “that’s man’s words”, but the Bible says ALL Scripture is given by inspiration of God.

Inspiration means “divinely breathed in” (See Strong’s #G2315)

     So all Scripture is divinely breathed by God.

II Peter 1:21 reads “holy men of old spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

It’s not man’s words we’re reading in the Bible but God’s words.


A pastor has a heavy load and responsibility that he carries…. 

Ezek 3:17-21

     ….I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; 

     therefore, hear the Word at My mouth, 

     and give them warning from Me.

     When I say unto the wicked, thou shalt surely die; 

     and thou givest him not warning, 

     nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, 

     to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; 

     but his blood will I require at thine hand. 

     Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his 

     wickedness,nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity;

     but thou hast delivered thy soul.

     Again, when a righteous man doth turn from his 

     righteousness and commit iniquity, 

     and I lay a stumblingblock before him, 

     he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, 

     he shall die in his sin, 

     and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be 

     remembered, but his blood will I require at thine hand. 

     Nevertheless, if thou warn the righteous man, that the 

     righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, 

     because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul. 

If a pastor doesn’t preach the Word and warn us when we’re doing wrong, our blood will be on his hands when he stands before God.

But if he warns us and we choose to willfully sin regardless of what the pastor says, then God will not hold him responsible.

He has obeyed God in what He preaches.  It is then up to us to heed.

We must all (each individually) appear before the Judgment seat of Christ (II Cor 5:10) but the Pastor must give an account for you and is watching out for your soul (Heb 13:17)

Ecc 12:9-11

     And moreover, because the preacher was wise, 

     he still taught the people knowledge; 

     yea, he gave good heed, (pondered, to weigh – Strong’s H239)

     and sought out, (examined, searched out – Strong’s H2713) 

     and set in order (to straighten, make straight – Strong’s H8626)

     many proverbs.  

    (**in other words, he studied into the Word)

     The preacher sought to find out acceptable words:

     and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

     The words of the wise are as goads,   

     and as nails fasted by the masters of assemblies, 

     which are given from one shepherd. 

A wise preacher will teach the people knowledge concerning God’s Word and ways.

Sometimes those words will be acceptable words…

     words we want to hear, pleasing to the ears.

Sometimes those words will prick like goads.

     Goads were a spiked stick used for driving cattle.

Those spiked sticks would provoke or annoy so as to stimulate some action or reaction.

Sometimes the preacher’s words will annoy or provoke the listener.

That’s not his intention….he’s just delivering the Word of God.

God’s Word is not just to make us feel good; it’s purpose is also to stimulate some action or reaction so that we will reform and conform to God’s ways. 

God is a holy God and He requires for us to be holy just as He is holy. (I Peter 1:15)

Without holiness, no man shall see God (Heb 12:14)

God wants us to be blameless, without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation.  He wants us to be holy so we will shine as lights in the world.  (Phil 2:15)

We are to be spotless and blameless (II Pet 3:14)

We are to be holy in every way.

He instructs us to be holy in our conversation…

     the words that proceed out of our mouth.  (I Peter 1:16)

He instructs us to be holy and blameless in our whole spirit, soul, and body (I Thess 5:23-24)  

Paul instructed that his letter, the words of instruction that he penned as he was moved on by the Holy Ghost be read to all the holy brethren (1 Thess 5:27)

What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is IN you?

You are not your own.

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body 

     and in your spirit which are God’s.

**Note: Not just your spirit but also in your body   (I Cor 6:19-20)

God not only created us, but He also purchased us with the Blood He 

     shed on that cruel cross on Calvary. 

Because He redeemed us with His own Blood, He has a right to require us to be holy.  

Our body does not belong to us - it belongs to Jesus Christ. 

Therefore, if God’s Word says we should do or not do something, we need to obey.  

If God’s Word says something is an abomination (something He absolutely detests and loathes), we need to avoid those things at all costs.

The things God asks us to abstain from pale in comparison to the price of Calvary. 

Those landmarks (boundaries) are not there to keep us from enjoying life or having fun.  A boundary is set there for a reason.  

They are there to protect us.  They are there to keep us from falling into sin. 

God set a boundary in the garden of Eden – 

    They could eat of every tree in the garden except one.

    They were not to eat of the fruit of the tree of life.

That boundary seemed harmless, almost ridiculous.  

It looked like God was trying to keep them from becoming wiser, 

     more like Him. 

But God had a reason and we can still see the effects of Adam and Eve’s disobedience today. 

There are “No Swimming” signs posted in a certain area around a body of water in Louisiana called Toledo Bend. The waters from all appearance seem so inviting. People have disobeyed those signs, thinking the same and lost their lives. To them, it seemed the signs were ridiculous and just trying to keep them from having fun, but those signs were not posted to spoil anyone’s fun.  Instead, they were posted with the intent to save lives.

What some did not realize is that there are dangers within those waters….alligators lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce on any unsuspecting person who would enter. 

If the Watchman for your soul, your pastor, issues warnings against certain things, we do well to listen.  He’s not trying to put shackles on you.  He’s trying to keep shackles from being put on you through sin. 






Holiness – What does this mean?


Warren Wersbe writes in his book titled “Be Holy” (pg 11) ….

“Contrary to what you may hear in today’s sermons and popular religious songs, there is more emphasis in the Bible on the holiness of God than there is on the love of God.”

God’s holiness is mentioned in the Bible more than any other attribute, even more than it mentions the love of God.   Yet the word ‘holiness’ is not popular and the topic is avoided among most Christians today.

Many want to hear about the love of God, the mercies of God, and what all God will do FOR them.  Some may not mind hearing messages about sanctification and separation from the world....as long as sins are not named and details explained. As long as the message is vague, the hearer feels safe and will amen the preacher.

It makes a person wonder how the word ‘holiness’ become such a disdained and avoided topic to so many?  If it’s in the Bible, it is not to be ignored or glossed over.  

It is God saying it, not man.  Holiness is God’s #1 attribute.

1 Peter 1:15-16

     But as He which hath called you is holy, 

     so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. 

     Because it is written, Be ye holy for I am holy.

Hebrews 12:14

     Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man 

     shall see the Lord.

It is God who is requiring us to be holy.  It is God who says that without holiness we will not be able to see Him. We are to be holy because He is holy.  God will never ask us to do anything that He does not think we are able to do.  He would never instruct us to be holy if we are not capable of being  holy.

I have been walking this Apostolic Truth for over 40 years and have found this to be true: Most often the questions of “why?” or “why not?” comes from a heart problem before it ever becomes a head question. 

Loving God means loving and keeping His commandments.

1 John 5:3

     For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and 

     His commandments are not grievous. 

“Not grievous” means “not burdensome of oppressive.” 

Everything God asks us to do, not do, or to give up is for our good.  It’s not to oppress us, burden us, or harm us.  It is to protect us.

I love Jesus too much to displease Him.  He’s been so good to me, done so much for me…anything He asks of me is incomparable to all He’s done for me and the price He paid on Calvary.  I want to obey Him in everything because I am bought with a price.

Contrary to what society teaches and believes, we do not own ourselves. Some will say, “It’s my body, it’s my life, I’ll do what I want!”   WRONG!  

Paul wrote in 1 Cor 6:20

     For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, 

     and in your spirit, which are God’s.

1 Cor 7:23

     Ye are bought with a price….

Both of these verses remind us that we belong to God. God formed us, He created us, and then He redeemed us with His Precious Blood at Calvary.  Whoever buys something owns it!  Jesus bought us! Jesus owns us!  We are not our own.  We belong to God!

Because He owns us:

     We can no longer go wherever we please.

     We can no longer say and do whatever we want.

     We can no longer dress and act in whatever way we decide.

Because He owns us, we are commanded to glorify God not just in our spirit but also IN OUR BODIES.

I Cor 3:16-17

     Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, 

     and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

     If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; 

     for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. 

That Scripture shows us we can not live just any way we want to live. We are the Temple of the holy God, therefore we are to be holy. If we defile our temple (our body), God said He’ll destroy that person.  Very serious to think about. 

Since Jesus possesses ownership of us, we are naturally required and expected to comply with His wishes and wants for our lives.  It’s our “reasonable service”.  

Romans 12:1

     I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,

     that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, 

     acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 

Notice Paul said to present your bodies.  We are to present our bodies to God.  

Paul continued in Romans 12:2:

     And be not conformed to this world:

     but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, 

     that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable,

     and perfect will of God.

Conformed means “to fashion alike”.  (see Strong’s G4964) In other words, don’t try to conform to the same pattern and fashions of this world.  We should not try to look, act, think, or be like the world.  We are called to be different, set apart because we are the Temple of the Living God.


II Cor 6:16-18

     And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? 

     For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, 

     I will dwell in them, and walk in them; 

     and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 

     Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, 

     saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; 

     and I will receive you.    

     And will be a Father unto you, 

     and ye shall be my sons and daughters, 

     saith the Lord Almighty. 

How awesome to think about what these Scriptures are saying…

God is not just dwelling in us, but He is also walking inside of us (when we receive the Holy Ghost).  Because of this, God said to be separate from the world.

And because of these Promises, we are to cleanse ourselves…

2 Cor 7:1

     Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse 

     ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting 

     holiness in the fear of the Lord. 

Notice, Paul didn’t say to let God cleanse us…he instructed that we are to cleanse ourselves.  Yes, God does some things in us but there are other things that God requires for us to do.

Again, going back to Romans 12:1

     I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye 

     present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, 

     which is your reasonable service. 

We are to present ourselves as a living SACRIFICE.   A sacrifice will cost us something.  Our sacrifice is to be found holy and acceptable unto God.  God is not asking something from us that is unreasonable. Paul wrote to the Church in Rome that it is our REASONABLE service. 

II Timothy 2:19-21

     Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, 

     having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are His. 

     And, let every one that nameth 

     the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 

     But in a great house there are not only vessels of god and of silver, 

     but also of wood and of earth; 

     and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

     If a man therefore purge himself from these, 

     he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet 

     for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

Again, these Scriptures show there are certain things God requires for us to do.

If we profess to be a Christian, we are to stop sinning.  We are to purge ourself from anything that defiles us…then we will be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and ready for the Master’s use.  I want to be a vessel of honor that Jesus can use. 

Holiness will be reflected not only inwardly 

but also outwardly. 

Some think holiness is only referring to what is on the inside.  They will quote 1 Samuel 16:7 in an effort to back up what they think with Scripture….

…for man looketh on the outward appearance,

but the LORD looketh on the heart.

That Scripture is not condoning living, dressing, talking, or acting anyway a person chooses.  That Scripture is revealing that while man make a judgment about a person depending upon their outward appearance, God sees what is truly in a person’s heart. 

The heart may be full of evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness (lewd, lustful desires and behavior), an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness, and such like. (Mk 7:21-23)

So, does that mean God is not concerned with the outward appearance? No, it does not.

If God was not concerned with the outward appearance: 

He would not have made COATS of skins to cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness – their fig leaf aprons would have been sufficient…if God didn’t care.

There are many more Scriptures I could point out - those will be addressed in a future lesson.  

I will conclude with this example:  If you were served food in a bowl that was dirty inside but clean on the outside, it is a given that you would not eat out of that bowl until the inside was washed and made clean.  

What would you do if you picked up a bowl that was clean inside but the outside was dirty?  Would you feel comfortable eating out of it?  Or would you wash it inside and out to make sure there are no contaminants that will get in your food to possibly make you sick…from the inside or the outside? 

The majority of us would want the bowl we are going to eat out of to be clean inside and out.  In the same way, God wants us to be clean inside and out.  We are the Temple (the dwelling place) of the Living God.  He does not want to dwell in an unclean temple.  God wants the place where He resides to be clean inside and out…a place that brings glory and honor to Him.  

Being holy inside is important - a person can dress and appear to be holy and modest externally, but if the heart is full of pride, rebellion, gossip, bitterness, etc. that person is not holy inside. That’s what that Scripture means when it says man looks on the outside but God looks at the heart.  God sees what others may not see. We must make sure our heart, our emotions, our thoughts are clean and holy.

Being holy outside is as important as being holy inside – just as you wouldn’t want to eat out of a dish that is dirty on the outside.  Many like to argue that it is not and God doesn’t care. However, we can find several Scriptural examples revealing the opposite.  

God loved us when we were unlovable 

BUT He does not leave us that way.

Every person Jesus touched left changed…not just internally but also externally.  The man of Gadarenes was found CLOTHED and in his right mind once he met Jesus. (Luke 8:26-38) 

Holiness when reflected inside and out reveals that the god of this world no longer has a hold of us.  It reveals that we are no longer bound nor are we serving self or pride.  Living a holy life reveals to others who is influencing our thoughts and actions. Each of us is going to serve something – either the One True Living God or the god of this world.  How we dress, act, talk, the things we do and the places we go reveal which god we are truly serving.

Have you ever wondered why Pentecostals do or don’t do certain things?

Some think it’s a “Pentecostal” thing.

I heard someone say to another, “You can’t do that! You go to a Pentecostal Church.” THAT is not the reason we do and don’t do certain things.

I heard the same reason given but with slightly different words when I would question and ask why as a child.  It caused me to begin to question what I believed and why I believed it as I grew older. 

Midway through my teen years, I began a quest to know God’s Truth.  In my confusion, I sincerely poured my heart out to God and wanted to know what His Word really says and means. 

God will answer and reveal things to you in His Word if you will go to Him sincerely in prayer and with an open heart. His answers did not come all at once. He opened my understanding her a little, there a little as I grew and matured in my walk with Him. 

As we study the Bible together, prayerfully ask God to help you to understand His Word and His ways.  These studies are a combination of studies put together by Bro. Gregory and I.  

I pray this helps you understand holiness inside and out more fully.  Holiness is beautiful and is for our protection, not oppression. 



Should We Wait Until They Ask?                                         


The recurring common reason and excuse I'm hearing for not teaching holiness and separation from the world is to "wait until they ask". 

Do you wait until a baby or child asks before you instruct them not to bite, or hit, or steal, or pull hair, etc?  No, you work to teach and correct a bad behavior they're exhibiting.  

Do you wait until a baby asks before you teach it how to say words, how to walk, or what 'No!' means?

Do you wait before a child asks before you begin teaching it the ABCs, how to put letters together to make words, and how to write? 

Do you wait until a child asks before beginning to teach him or her reading,  writing,  arithmetic, history, geography, art, music, etc?

No, you begin trying to teach and instruct things you know they need to learn, increasing the knowledge and lessons needed as they grow and grasp what they've previously been taught. 

Did God wait for His people to ask before He gave them the 10 Commandments and extensive instructions in the Law concerning the governing and ordinances of right and wrong?

No, He gave them rules to follow, instructing and correcting bad behavior and the sin nature that are contrary to God's ways. 

God gave them instructions on how to dress, how to live, what was ok or not ok to eat, things that were an abomination to Him, what was right and what was wrong. 

Did Paul wait for the saints in the Churches to ask questions before sending letters of instruction on how to live as a Christian and the sins they needed to shun and avoid?   In a few instances, yes, but for the most part, No.  Paul sent them letters instructing and teaching them how to live Godly in this present world. 

His letters included instructions for all...men and women, young and old, married and unmarried....concerning many topics including clothing,  hair, alcohol,  submission,  things that will send a person to hell, and the need for the Fruit of the Spirit besides just the Gifts of the Spirit. 

Paul in his letter to Timothy instructed him to.....

2 Timothy 4:2 - 

Preach the word; 

be instant in season, out of season; 

reprove, ( means reprimand, tell a fault, admonish)

rebuke, (means express sharp disapproval or criticism of (someone) because of their behavior or actions.)

exhort  (means to try to encourage or strongly urge someone to do something)

with all longsuffering and doctrine.  (Use patience and the Word of God)

No, I will not wait until someone asks before teaching Biblical Truths that are contained within the Bible.  Because....

2 Timothy 3

[16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable 

for doctrine, 

for reproof, 

for correction, 

for instruction in righteousness: 

[17] That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Throughly furnished means to equip fully (Strong’s G1822)


If we're not teaching, we're failing                                   


God told Ezekiel in Ezekiel 44:23, “And they shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.” The priests and the ministry were instructed by God to TEACH MY PEOPLE THE DIFFERENCE!  

Our Churches are failing when they preach motivational messages but do not teach the Doctrines.

 "...Make a separation between the Sanctuary and the profane place."  Ezekiel 42:20

There must be a separation!  

There must be a separation between the Holy and the unholy!

Too many for too long have been trying to blend the two.  You cannot be Holy and unholy at the same time!

God is a Holy God and commands us to be Holy as He is Holy.  He commands us to 'come out from among them <the world> and be separate. And touch NOT the unclean thing.' 1Cor 6:17

Ezekiel 42:20 stood out to me as I read my Bible one day.  Then, it stood out to me again as I opened my Bible the very next morning. .  

My eyes were drawn to several passages in Daniel 9 where Daniel not only repented for himself but for all of Israel.  

God is calling His people to repentance and to cleanse our homes from anything that is displeasing to Him. So, I began to repent and ask God to forgive me of any time that I have rebelled against Him; for anytime that I have not obeyed His voice; for any time I have not walked in His ways. 

I knew God was speaking, I could feel His Presence strong, yet I felt a hesitation at posting about it on social media.  I told God many do not want to hear what I have to say. They don't believe it and some get angry at my words. I wrote these words down, but then set it aside.

I began to listen to a video I was tagged in. Brother Raggio confirmed in his teaching on The Beauty of Holiness what I was feeling and writing. I would encourage you to listen for the entirety of his message as well. (It's on YouTube and FaceBook)

Too many look at God as a loving God while ignoring the other part of God that is Holy and requires Holiness of us. They excuse away sin and think God will not condemn them for sinful lifestyles. 

This is one of the greatest deceptions the devil has perpetrated on mankind.

The Bible instructs that without holiness no man shall see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14

Just claiming to love Jesus is not enough to get you into heaven. There is more to our walk with God after we have repented of our sins, been baptized in the name of Jesus, and received the Gift of the Holy Ghost evidenced by speaking in other tongues  The Bible says no sin can enter there. (1 Cor 6:9-10, Gal. 5:19-21, Rev. 21:27) There must be a separation between the Holy and the unholy.

The time of Jesus' coming is drawing nearer. There is also coming a time of great Tribulation.  

I feel a confirmation to what Bro Raggio said, "If you persist in being worldly and spiritual, you're going to be destroyed."

There must be a separation! 

"...Make a separation between the Sanctuary and the profane place."  Ezekiel 42:20

We must teach Holiness and separation from the world.

If we don't teach it, how will they know?

The Bible says in Hosea 4:6, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge...."

There is a lack of knowledge and understanding of what God’s Word says because there are many who do not read it.  If they do, they do not read it in it’s entirety.  But, also, part of it is from a lack of understanding.  The understanding comes when there are ‘teaching priests’ (2 Chronicles 15:3)  These are those who expound and teach what the Word of God says and means.  

There are those who do not want to hear the deeper Truths in the Bible. However, a strong warning follows for those who close their ears and refuse to hear the teachings in God's Word.

...BECAUSE thou hast REJECTED knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

We have to teach WHY we believe what we believe.  And it has to be more than just Acts 2:38.  Because when the questions of controversy arise, we need to be able to stand and give an answer. 

We like to read the Promises in the Bible.  The little box of Bible Promises became popular many years.  

While those are good (because they are God’s Word and we can hold God to His Promises), we need to also take notice that for every Promise there is usually a clause attached of what God expects or requires from us. 

Every Promise in the Book is mine, but so is every warning, admonition, instruction and teaching regardless of how our flesh feels about it.  

If it’s in the Bible, we need to be open to hearing what the Word of God says.   There is a way that SEEMETH RIGHT unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. (Proverbs 16:25)


Jesus corrected a lot of false teachings and concepts in Matthew 5.  

Man thought and taught one way while God's Word taught another.

21 - ye have heard that it was said... but I say unto you....

27 - ye have heard that it was said... but I say unto you....

31 - it hath been said....but I say....

33 - ye have heard that it was said... but I say unto you....

38 - ye have heard that it was said... but I say unto you....

43 - ye have heard that it was said... but I say unto you....

Make sure you are following and living God's way because there is a way that seems right unto man, but it’s not according to God.

Isaiah 55:8-9 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

God’s ways are not our ways nor is His way of thinking the same as how we may see or reason things to be. 

We must be sure that what we believe and how we live, dress, and conduct ourselves are in line with God’s Word and His ways.

Beware False Teachers

I woke up with this thought: false teachers are abounding yet many are not discerning them because they appeal to and appease the carnal nature.  People are heaping to themselves teachers that will preach and teach what tickles their ears and makes them feel good in their sins. 💔  watch, pray, fast, and read the Bible in depth more. Ask God to help you learn to discern between the holy and the unholy, what is Truth and what is err.

PRESS Toward the Mark

 I press

toward the mark 

for the prize

of the high calling of God

in Christ Jesus 

Philippians 3:14


The definition of "press" means to "move or cause to move into a position of contact with something by exerting continuous physical force."


"High calling" means God has extended an invitation. (Strong’s G2821)


Our goal (the mark we're pressing toward) is to obtain the prize of the high calling that God has invited us to. 

Living for God is not easy.

Some are trying to make it fun and frivolity.  

But living for God - not self - will bring battles and pressures in your mind and body that will wear you down. 

The only way you can obtain the goal and receive the prize of the high calling of God is by exerting continuous physical force through prayer and fasting.   

You'll feel it in your body - because you are engaged in a spiritual war.

The devil knows he has but a short time so he's fighting those who live for God hard.

But keep pressing and don't give up.  

The prize is just ahead. 

It will be worth it all when we see Christ.

How Can We Minister to the Lord?

A friend contacted me with a question concerning ministering unto the Lord.  I am posting my thoughts here for future reference:

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but these thoughts came to mind:

1 Cor 7:35 references attending upon the Lord without distraction. In this passage Paul is speaking about marital relationships in the surrounding verses. A spouse can tell when the person is present physically but not present emotionally or mentally. Their thoughts or elsewhere, thinking and caring about other things other than their spouse. Or how you can be together in the same room but with a phone or TV, the person is not really present with their spouse. They're so absorbed and what is going on in the movie or on social media. You have to stop and remove all distractions and spend time together. In the same way we have to spend time with the Lord without distraction.

The other thought that has been going through my mind quite a bit for several years is how we get so focused and wrapped up on God's faithfulness to us and all that God can do for us and what we want Him to do for us but most rarely ever think about what God requires from us or what we can do for Him.  How faithful are we to Him? How much of our time and attention are we giving to Him? Separate and outside of our 'want' and 'need' prayers?  

We need to give God attention, loving on and adoring Him in a similar way that we Dore on and shower our children and grandchildren with attention.

Will You heed or ignore the warnings?

I was watching a video of the tornado as it hit areas of Little Rock Arkansas. The warning had went out. The sirens were screaming a warning to take cover. You can still see cars driving back and forth despite the warning and and the signs all around that the tornado is near. There's a man standing in the parking lot watching it all. Thankfully, he listened to the please to get inside where it was safer. Then, suddenly, the tornado was upon them.

Those videoing nearly lost their life when they were almost pulled out the door by the force of the Wind. I am glad that they made it through. I do not know what happened to those who were in the vehicles driving by.

It reminded me of the warning cries that have been going out, "Jesuis coming! Get ready! Live for Jesus! Get in the Church!  Obey Jesus' instructions to be Born Again of water (Baptism in Jesus name) and of Spirit (receiving the Holy Ghost evidenced by speaking in other tongues)" <John 3:3,5 + Acts 2:1-4,38-39 and so many more Scriptures >

Yet so many are ignoring the cries and the warning sounds and signs.  They're standing there watching the debris fly around them.  They feethe winds of destruction blowing harder and harder across this sin sick world. Yet, they're not making the move to safety. Some, are heeding the cries to get inside the Church where it safe. While others are continuing on with life as usual,  as if they don't see or hear the roar growing louder around them.

Will you heed the warning cries?  Time is running out.  Some never lived to see today. 💔 Our hearts grieve with those suffering losses. We're not promised tomorrow. We'll either stand before God in judgment by way of the grave or at the return of Jesus when the wheat are separated from the tares. We don't know when either of those times will be.  We just need to be ready and watching.  

Don't be like those who ignored the warnings.  Listen to the cries going out to obey the salvation call and get in the Ark of safety (the Church). Eternity is too long to play around with and delay getting your soul right with Jesus. 

Will you heed the warnings or continue to ignore them?
